Cobra Karate Club's History

Cobra Karate was formed in 2007 by instructors who had been training within other organisations and noticed a shift in culture. Best practise standards and their own development needs were no longer being met as their former clubs grew in size and became local self-governing organisations, moving away from any membership with respected karate or martial arts representative bodies.

These instructors decided that the stringent requirements and standards upheld by being members of an external representative body would be much more beneficial for the students and themselves. Not only would they be taken more seriously by other martial arts organisations, but also it would open up opportunities to be part of competitions, courses and tournaments with other karate clubs, giving students the opportunity to meet new people outside of their own club.

With students approaching the grade of black belt too, having their black belt grade ratified by a respected external martial arts association and listed on the National Blackbelt Register would provide more credibility than an inter-club grade. With this in mind, after 12 years of teaching karate, Cobra Karate Club was formed under the membership of Cobra Martial Arts Association (CMAA).

Between 2007 and now, other instructors have discovered the importance of putting students and standards first and have become Cobra Karate instructors though a desire to maintain quality teaching in a personal, friendly environment and giving their students opportunities to experience exposure to other martial arts.

Cobra Karate's instructors and senior students continue develop their karate foundation under the humble instruction and watchful (if somewhat unwitting!) eye of Alan Woods - a practitioner of traditional Okinawan Kenpo Karate Jutsu since 1967 currently ranked at 6th Dan awarded in 1994.
